Project Update – 10/28/17

Work continued removing Mill Pond dam and motivate its impounded sediments downstream.

The timber crib and concrete dams continued to be removed, with water levels dropping more than 26 feet (Photo 1). An access road was maintained down to the dam for the removal of demolished materials from the log crib and timber dams. Concrete was trucked from the site and timber and fill from the log crib dam was saved for reuse on-site (Photo 2). Jetting operations continued, flushing fine sediments from the mouth of the creek so that they could be carried further into the pond and prevent it from piling up at the delta (Photo 3). Cobble and topsoil was harvested from the delta and moved to upland stockpiles (Photo 4). Water was released from Sullivan Lake Reservoir and redirected through the delta, using dikes and dug channels, to move sediment downstream (Photo 5 & 6).

Project Update – 10/21/17

Work continued removing Mill Pond dam and motivate its impounded sediments downstream.

The timber crib and concrete dams continued to be removed, with water levels dropping more than 20 feet. The channel behind the dam was no longer large enough accommodate a barge mounted excavator. An access road was constructed down to the dam, the excavator was moved to land, and demolition continued from atop native fill behind the dam. Jetting operations continued, flushing fine sediments from the mouth of the creek so that they could be carried further into the pond and prevent it from piling up at the delta. Water was released from Sullivan Lake Reservoir and redirected through the delta, using dikes and dug channels, to move sediment downstream.

Project Update – 10/14/17

Work continued removing the Mill Pond dam and its impounded sediments downstream.

The timber crib and concrete dams continued to be removed, with water levels dropping more than 13 feet (Photo 1). Steel spikes were removed from timber recovered from the log crib dam so that it could be reused onsite (Photo 2). Limited jetting occurred around the pond of the newly exposed fine sediments. Water was released from Sullivan Lake Reservoir and redirected through the delta, using dikes and dug channels, to move sediment downstream (Photos 3 & 4). A second slide stabilization structure was completed.

Project Update – 9/30/17

The demolition of the dam began this week, where a series of notches were made at the top of the spill way, drawing down the surface of Mill Pond over 6 feet (Photos 1 & 2). The timber crib dam continued to be removed. One of two large woody structures were completed to fortify unstable slopes up stream of Mill Pond (Photos 3 & 4). Log jams were constructed to influence Sullivan Creek when it is put to the excavated starter channels (Photo 5).

Project Update – 9/23/17

Work continued, preparing for the drawdown of Mill Pond and the release of water from Sullivan Lake. The timber crib dam continued to be removed (Photos 1 & 2). Work continued fortifying upstream unstable slopes with large woody structures (Photo 3). Work began constructing log jams to influence Sullivan Creek when it is put to the excavated starter channels (Photo 4). The delta continued to be cleared of vegetation to prevent it from washing downstream (Photo 5). Downstream, a rockery was constructed to stabilize a bank adjacent to Sullivan Lake Road (Photo 6).
