Engineered log jams continued to be installed at the middle reaches of the floodplain, with adjustments being made to their construction given varying subsurface conditions. Trees with root wads were collected from an offsite location and delivered to the project site. A series of starter channels were excavated at the lower reaches of the floodplain to erode impounded sediment just upstream from the dam. An island of deposited sand was partially graded and stockpiled for use around the site.
Project Update – 6/15/18
The majority of the work consisted of grading the floodplain of an overflow channel at the middle reaches of the site. Sediment deposited at the mouth of Sullivan Creek during the recent high flow event was mobilized by rerouting the creek in order to restore it to its historic channel elevation to facilitate better functioning of the outfall from the wastewater treatment plant of Metaline Falls. Logs were collected and sorted for use in engineered log jams through the site, and remaining portions of the log crib dam were removed from the channel to facilitate further cutting through impounded sediment at the lower reaches of the site.

The majority of the work consisted of collecting planting medium as well as sand and gravel from the delta and stockpiling it in upland areas to the south. Timber from the site was collected and categorized for future use in ELJ structures, areal survey was conducted to inform the development of the final floodplain design, and a starter channel was dug to erode sediment deposited at the mouth of Sullivan Creek as it meets the Pend Oreille River.

The week was spent collecting planting medium as well as sand and gravel from the delta and stockpiling it in upland areas to the south. A portion of a high flow channel was dug and graded in the middle reaches, and steep banks adjacent to the campground were graded to shallower grades.

Design build contractor continued grading efforts and manual manipulation of flow paths to evacuate sediment in the delta. Design team on site to continue evaluation of historic creek location.
