Trail crews continued the construction of the looping trail to the south. Remaining concrete and log crib timber was removed from the creek at the dam site. The eastern channel at the upper reach continued to be widened to expand the floodplain cross section. Work continued constructing the bank reinforcement structure at the campground. The remaining upland area desiccation cracks were track walked to provide a safe walking surface for future planting activities. Topsoil continued to be spread throughout the middle and lower reaches. A new haul road was constructed adjacent to the campground and the existing access ramp at the campground was abandoned and began to be removed.
Project Update – 8/10/18
Trail crews began constructing by hand, the eastern portion of a trail that will connect to the abandoned Forest Service road trail. Top soil was spread in upland areas in the upper portion of the lower reach. Cobble was transferred from the upper portion of the lower reach to the campground and was graded. Construction began on log jam structures adjacent to the campground, and the top of the campground cut bank was graded. Northwest Youth Corps was on site to conduct campground improvements, limbing trees, replacing fire rings and campsite site markers, and placing concrete pads for bear secure food storage lockers.
Project Update – 8/4/18
A haul road was constructed adjacent to the upper reach at the east end of the site, with trees, grasses, and sedges collected and placed in a “nursery” for later planting throughout the site. The looping trail to the south of the site, along an abandoned Forest Service road, was cleared in advance of trail construction. The majority of the remaining concrete at the old dam site was removed, allowing the Sullivan Creek thalweg to cut closer to final grade at the lower reach. Portions of the upland areas of the floodplain at the lower reach were graded. Cobble was harvested from the upper portion of the lower reach, opening up the floodplain to final grade, and providing material for use adjacent to the campground. A turn out for the campground kiosk was constructed.
Project Update – 7/21/18
ELJ structures continued to be constructed in the middle reach of the site. Began excavating the upper floodplain and continued starter channel excavation in the lower reach.
Project Update – 7/14/18
Upland areas with pronounced desiccation cracks were track-walked by dozer to provide a safe and stable surface for future planting activities and minimize future erosion. Starter channels at the lower reaches, just above the dam site, were excavated to expose the historic channel beneath impounded sediments. A large low-land sand deposition in the upper portion of the lower reach was dozed into stockpiles. Engineered log jams (ELJ) continued to be constructed at the middle reaches of the site.
